Caio de Azevedo is a Brazilian composer based in Munich, Germany. His music has been described as “original and versatile” by Diapason Magazine, a “striking mental sculpture, interwoven with emotions and certainties” by the Süddeutsche Zeitung, and “suffused with colour” by Classical Magazine, embracing aesthetic plurality, he combines a deep sense of storytelling with continuous reinvention.

His extensive catalogue of works ranges from lieder and children’s chamber opera to ballets and concertos. Notable among his compositions is Marionnette, a bagatelle-concertante for viola and chamber orchestra, which won him 1st Prize at the Concours de Genève in 2024, performed at Victoria Hall in Switzerland.

Other significant works include Macbeth, a three-act ballet for orchestra with choreography by Steffen Fuchs, performed by the Staatsorchester Rheinische Philharmonie; Glas, a children’s chamber opera premiered at Deutsche Oper am Rhein (Düsseldorf) directed by Friederike Karig; his first string quartet, performed by the Mivos String Quartet and Golgatha, a work for soprano and ensemble commissioned by the independent opera ensemble NovoFlot in Berlin. His works have been performed in Germany, Brazil, Switzerland, Hungary, England and Italy by ensembles such as the International Contemporary Ensemble, ensemble recherche, Oktopus Ensemble, Quarteto Radamés Gnattali, among others. 

Caio holds a Bachelor’s in Cello from Universidade Federal da Bahia (Brazil), a Master’s in Musical Creation-Interpretation from the same institution, where he studied with Suzana Kato (cello) and Paulo Costa Lima (composition). He also earned a Master’s and a Master Class Certificate in Composition from the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Munich, studying with Moritz Eggert.

In addition to his work as a composer, Caio is the cellist of the Zentaur-Quartett and a member of the Neues Kollektiv München, both of which are dedicated to contemporary music. As a conductor, he took part in the choral conducting master class in Bogotá (Colombia) with Maria Guinand and Alberto Grau (2011) and recently he has premiered works such as the oratorio Embrace and the short opera Coded Bodies by Abigel Varga, as well as Finita, a theater piece he wrote in collaboration with the Theaterakademie August Everding and directed by Gineke Pranger. 

Caio has received several awards and scholarships, including the Lindembergue Cardoso Composition Contest, 2nd Prize and the Public Prize at the First Composition Prize of Bahia (Brazil), and 1st Prize at the Wolfgang Jacobi Composition Competition(Germany), a scholarship from the Orlandus Lassus Foundation (Rotary Club Munich) and was a composition fellow at the 45. International Winter Festival of Campos do Jordão. In 2023, Caio was a resident at the Cité des Arts, in Paris, and in 2024, he was awarded the Concerto Prize as an Emerging Talent by the prestigious brazilian classical music magazine Concerto.
